Dolls Houses in History - Part 1 - Magpies-Miniatures.net

Posted on 5:33pm Thursday 30th Aug 2012
You can't have a dolls house without some dolls.Well, you COULD, but it may seem a little incomplete. So I think it's time I introduce you to a few of our little friends down here at Magpies-Miniatures.net
We have many dolls available, including Ceramic and Poseable dolls, and resin figures. The designs cover a wide range of eras to suit various scenes. For those of you out there who are interested in recreating Tudor, Georgian, or Victorian dollhouse scenes, then this blog post is for you.... (Now's the time to get yourself a good cup of tea, and relax before scrolling down.)

Tudor 1485-1603Tudor beams style top
ElizabethThe Tudor period is an era which if often referred to in schools in the UK, and I recall being taught about the Tudors and Stewarts when I was about 8 years old in school, a main reason fir this is the focus on a particular King. Who knows the rhyme..."divorced, beheaded, died, divorced, beheaded, survived"? This, of course, refers to the six wives of Henry III, who was King from 1509-1547, the middle of the 'Tudor Age'.
This time period was one of ill-health and poverty, with recurring outbreaks of the Black Death hitting the UK, with rats spreading infection. People often lived in small homes, often comprising of only one or two rooms. Stools were seen more often in homes, as opposed to chairs, and houses often had thatched roofs with wooden, hand cut beams. The outside of houses were painted with limewash, which gave them their white colour. The wood was 3 Black Mice.Resin, Fine Qualityleft natural- the black and white look we know now as being "Tudor Style" was actually a Victorian addition- the Victorians treated  the wood with a black tar to prevent rotting, which gave them the darkened colour. Glass was first used for windows in Tudor times, but was very expensive, so more poverty stricken households often used cloth, or even paper. Chimneys, again were for the wealthy, and poorer households would have a simple hole in the roof to let the smoke escape. Wealth was often shown through the use of glass in the design and build of the house.
Tudor Past times include watching plays, as Shakespeare was an aspiring playwright of the time, and the Globe Theatre was built in 1599. Other pasttimes include a type of football game, with the rich enjoying jousting and fencing games.
Field of FlowersFashion for the rich meant detailed and ornate clothing, as clothes were a menas of expressing wealth. Ladies wore tightly fitting corsets, and padded skirts with long gowns to cover. Men would be seen wearing silk shirts with frilled detailing at the necks and wrists, hose, and  a doublet. 'Fashion' for the poor meant simple, loose-fitting clothes made from wool cloth- trousers, tunics, and floor length dresses.

Georgian 1714-1830
The Georgian period was an age of change in Britain, as it saw the Industrial Revolution. If any of you saw the Openining Ceremony for the Olympic Games, London 2012, you would have seen an insight into this time.
This era saw more defined boundaries between classes, a complete change in landscape and architechure
as Black Top Hatcities were revolutionied for factories and their workers. Georgian fashion was Bellaexaggerated with full length skirts, bows and frills, with ladies hair being pinned up high. Corsets were still a must for the ladies. Men often donned the 'Frock Coat'. This was tight fitting on the arms and torso, and  flared out at the bottom. Waistcoats were also popular, as were cravats.Pink Corset Set
Houses ranged in styles, including huge mansions for the wealthy, and terraced homes for the working class. Simplicity, symmetry, and solidity were the important elements in British Georgian architecture.

Victorian 1837-1901GiGi
Dollhouse Miniature Dolls - Victorian Grandparents Doll SetThe Victorian and Georgian periods are very close in terms of time, and fashions. Many people choose to decorate their dollhouse in a Victorian fashion, as it is considered to be quintessentially 'British'. It is a period which is focused on by fimmakers, authors and directors. Think Oliver Twist, and Charles Dickens and you can't go far wrong.
The Victorian period saw many major developments that made travel, communications and trade easier. The railways allowed people to travel cheaply and rapidly, opening up new possibilities for both rich and poor. The postal service expanded after the introduction of the 'Penny Post'.
Many of the things we take for granted today, such as photography, telephones, electric light bulbs and cars were invented during this era. In Fact, rather than list them all- have a listen to this...

so don't be putting teddy bears in your Victorian house if you want to make them authentic!!
As far as dolls go, Victorians (along with modern day) are probably our most catered for and most wanted here at Magpies Miniatures, which means we have a really lovely collection! Head on over to THE DOLLS CATEGORY to see the full range.

As there is still so much to cover, I will return with another blog tomorrow looking at the War Years up to modern day, so please come back again soon to see what other little treasures we have to show you. I can assure you you won't be disappointed.

BLOG: A Dolls House Emporium from Magpies-Miniatures.net

Posted on 3:39pm Tuesday 28th Aug 2012
So many of our customers have wonderful bars (as touched on in a previous Blog post), others interested in specialist shops, and we find many customers interested in building Dolls House emporiums - shops which sell a large variety of goods, more like a department store or supermarket. We have a specialist 'Shop' section on our website for dedicated items, but really the entire catalogue of goods we offer here at Magpies Miniatures would be well fitting to a dolls house emporium.
Ready to shop? Let's see what we can rustle up.
Large Shop Shelves, WhiteSecond things first, (presuming there's already a place for the shop to go, which would be the first thing...) you're going to need some kind of display shelving or tabletops - or both! This white shelving unit would look wonderful in many settings, including smaller specialist sweet shops, or even larger emporiums. Personally speaking, when I see this, it reminds me of the original adaptation of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory- The scenes set in Bill's Sweet Shop where Charlie finds the Golden Ticket!
Watch this clip to see the shop I have in mind:

There's of course other shelving units, counter tops and display cabinets available for your shops in the relevant categories. For a quick link to them, Click HERE
Remember, emporiums stock a vast majority of products, but as there's so many out there on Magpies Miniatures, I'm going to stick with my theme, and have a look at all the sweet treats, candy and scrumdiddlyumptious bars (well, almost) we have available to fill this wonderful shop display.
Biscuit / Sweets in Jars, assorted, priced each
These little jars are a quick and easy way to get stocked up with goodies. They're pre-filled with an assortment of treats from Oreo's to bonbons- and the silicone stopper is removable to take out any of the sweets for your scenes- perhaps having a couple in a paper bag on the counter top would really bring the shop to life. Only £2.20 eachSet of 3 Empty Jars
Prefer to fill your own containers? We have a whole section of them, HERE, including this set of 3 miniature glass bottles with stoppers, each measuring approx Height 25mm : Width 10mm : Depth 10mm. These bottles are currently in the spotlight for Halloween, to put potions and ingredients for your cauldrons in, but why stop there- put your plans to practice and create something wonderful. Did I mention they're only £1.58 for 3? A fantastic little deal.
So besides jarred sweets, it'd be nice to have some other sweets too, to really make the shop come alive with colour, shapes and textures- just like Billy's shop in the scene above.
Lollipops, pack of 6How about a lollypop? 6 of them!?
Rolo TubeRolos? (Question is, do you love anyone enough to give them your last Rolo?) The photographs of the bars of chocolate really don't do them justice (and will be something we will be addressing in the near future)- but the attention to detail on these is really quite impressive!
We have lots of new stock awaiting to be photographed and put on to the website, so please make sure you check the New Arrivals category to keep an eye on what's coming! (A little insider secret, there will be some Bargain Boxes coming very shortly, consisting of some one-off pieces we have in stock, some end of line goods, and other little bits and pieces we're sure you're going to love- keep your eyes peeled on the New Arrivals page, and make sure you 'like' our Facebook page to keep updated with the latest! Shh...it's a secret.)
Anyway, where was I?
Black Scales
Metal Shop TillCounters and stock accounted for, customers are going to need somewhere to purchase their products, and of course someone to serve them. A quick search for "till" will show you the selection of cash registers we have in stock, such as this wonderful little piece with an opening cash drawer.
We also have a nice selection of weighing scales too, a necessity for any sweet shop, greengrocer or emporium.

And as far as a shopkeeper goes, I think this lovely little chap is a suitable candidate for the role. What do you think?
Butler / Shopkeeper in apron
So, there's a little of the basics of what you could do with your dollhouse emporium! There's lots more to look at to fill the rest of the shop, so I'll leave you to click and browse away.
Happy Shopping!

A craft idea: Dollhouse Chairs Jewellery Stand

A Craft Idea: Jewellery Stand
Posted on 7:48am Saturday 25th Aug 2012
I've been scouring the internet for creative ideas using dollhouse miniatures, something out of the ordinary for those who like to dabble in other crafts, and I stumbled across this Jewellery Stand from UrbanOutfitters, based on Dollhouse Chairs.
The stand they offered (which now appears to be Out of Stock) used iron cast chairs as opposed to actual dollhouse miniatures, probably for cheapness to mass produce- but how about creating your own for a unique gift for a teenager or anyone who loves dollhouses or jewellery( or yourself, of course!)! I absolutely love the idea. Each could be completely unique as you sculpt and glue the chairs together. We offer a nice range of chairs, and stools, which would be ideal for this little project. Or why not incorporate tables, or even other miniatures in there too, such as shoes or bags glued to the seats or hanging from the handles or legs.Ladderback Chair
Our chairs start at just £1.99 for this ladderback style (see image on the right) and we also have stools from £1.60, tables from £1.87, or even a set of 6 chairs and a dining table for as little as £13.95, working out as less than £2 per item.
If you fancy the idea of making it extra girly with accessories as mentioned above, there's a fantastic shoe collection here at Magpies Miniatures, to suit all decors!
Everything from Wellington Boots to High Heels, Browse our range HERE

Good luck if you decide to go ahead with this little DIY project idea- we'd love to see your photographs when you've finished!
Best Wishes, from the Magpies Miniatures Team.

TGI Friday!

TGI Friday!
Posted on 6:37pm Friday 24th Aug 2012
Woohoo! It's Friday! Which for many means it's time to put your feet up, watch some really awful programmes on TV, usually involving some wannabe-celebrities on a talentless show, good old soap operas or reruns of timeless classics. However, for others- such as myself- it's time to carry on with business as usual, to ensure you get top quality service from us here at Magpies Miniatures, and in my "spare" time I'll be running after my 3 year old diva of a daughter, light of my life of course, but knows just how to push those buttons on Mummy that make her truly exhausted. The outcome? Wine. A nice glass of wine. Who's with me?
Have you ever thought about creating a bar scene in miniature? Perhaps you run or own a bar or pub, and fancy the idea of a novel little room box representing yourself and your surroundings? Remember, dollshouse miniatures don't have to mean dolls in a house- push the limits of your imagination. Think outside the 'house' if you will, and see what astonishing and novel ideas you can come up with! We'd love to see your photographs too if you have any imaginative projects on the go, please email them over to us using the email address on the contact page, and perhaps you'll get featured on our website too!
Now then, where's the wine?
Ahhh, here we go...
Glass Wine Glasses Pack of 2
Red Wine Bottles, Pack of 6
A quick jump on over to the DRINK section and I've found a lovely bottle of red. Half a dozen of them in fact, and a steal at only £2.10- that's 35p per bottle! You won't find that at Asda (Walmart)! Glugging straight from the bottle just isn't classy enough (not even with a straw), so we definitely need a wine glass or two to accompany.
Good thing we have this covered at Magpies Miniatures too. Is there anything we haven't thought of?
This double pack of wine glasses is exactly what I had in mind. As usual, an exquisite attention to detail, and no cutting back on materials here- these glasses are actually made of glass! Clink-clink!

Prefer white over red?
Wine Bottles, Pack of 6
Done. (And only £1.27 for a set of 6, making them less than 22 pence each!)
More of a spirits drinker?
Spirit Bottles Pack of 6Spirit Bottle and 2 Glasses
Covered.
Beers?
Beer Cans, set of 6Beer Bottle - 1890's - 1930
Honestly, there isn't much that hasn't been thought of within miniatures, when you get looking closer your eyes really will be opened to the products that are available out there. And another thing, there's no memory lapses and sheer embarrassment the next day as occurrances come flooding back to you. Well, nothing that can't be put down to old age anyway.
Games Room - Billiard Table Set
Bar Corner Chair SetIf you are interested in creating a bar or pub scene, then we also have a good selection of furniture and accessories available, from tankards and beer mugs, to bar stools and tables. A personal favourite of mine is this corner bar set, with a lovely wooden finish. A nice selection of stools are also available, along with Dart Boards, Billiards and Snooker Tables. Don't forget the corkscrew.
Bar Set
That's all for now. Wishing you all a very merry (*hic*) weekend. Enjoy the mindless Television, and don't forget to put your feet up.
- Cheers, from The Magpies Miniatures Team.

White Wedding - Dollhouse Miniature Style

It’s a nice day for a…

The British Summer may have been a dominantly breezy and rather damp affair, but it definitely didn’t put a dampener on the special days of so many happy couples out there. A highlight (or low light, depending how I’m feeling) of living where I do is the Church bells ringing over the town. Weddings. Planning, worrying, budgeting, saving, spending, co-ordinating and celebrating. Tiring work just thinking about it, but how about a wedding scene created in miniature? – All of the above in a smaller scale? Now we’re talking.church int furn
Church - kitThere’s so many things to  consider to plan your wedding day (or wedding scene, in this case).
A setting would be the most important thing to initially consider, besides of course, what type of cake is going to be on offer…..
Cakes aside for a moment, a church wedding is traditionally the favourite of many brides, and this wonderful church kit could be a fabulous project for anyone interested in the world of miniatures. Decorate it with any of our selection of wallpapers- interior and exterior- roofing finishes, flooring, and you’re on to a great start, with beautiful details including realistic rafters, opening bell tower, and fabulous windows. The church goers will need somewhere to sit, and Magpies Miniatures have seen to that with our Pew kit, with a lectern and alter also available.

Decorate as you so wish with floral arrangements and accessories, and you’re well on the way to creating your dolls perfect day!
Doll… I suppose we need a bride and groom, as short of finding a Shrink-Ray or a highly trained hamster, nobody else is going to be walking down that aisle.
BrideGroomWe have a couple of women available here at Magpies Miniatures for the position of the Bride (and no, I’m not referring to Mandy and Niccy!)- a lovely little ceramic poseable figure, or a resin lady with detailed veil, flowers and a wonderful dress. Both magnificent in their own rights, and many other accessories you could decorate a room with back at the house, from white wedding shoes, to ‘diamond’ jewellery, dressing tables and more. After all, a bride-to-be needs a place to transform into the Princess she becomes on the big day.
Diamound Jewelery Set
And the Groom? No need to scour online dating websites, seedy bars or clubs, we have Mr (Almost) Perfect right here, in fact- two of them! Again one available in ceramic, and the other resin based. Accessories including top hats, canes and shaving sets help transform that bachelor pad into a world of a doting husband-to-be prepping for his big day.
Setting, Flowers, Bride, Groom… we’re getting there.
Who said being a wedding planner was difficult?

Now it’s definitely time to discuss cake.

Decorative Cut Rose CakeChocolate? Victoria Sponge? A classic fruit cake? Personally, I think I’m partial to a nice slice of Victoria sponge, with jam and butter-cream. Maybe not ‘traditional’ in a traditional-sense, but definitely delicious (looking, at least- let’s remember we can’t actually eat this one!)
Leaving the planning here, and you can take over to make your scene exactly as you desire. If the church is too much for you, or you don’t have the space required for such a big build, don’t be alarmed, you don’t have to miss out on the fun. Dollhosue miniatures doesn’t necessarily have to end in a house, or a church. Many of our customers use our projects for ideas of their own- creating scenes in wooden boxes and crates, jewellery making, card making, cake toppers, and room boxes in the most obscure places you can imagine- including teacups!  Let your imagination roll, and the impossible suddenly becomes possible.

Ding dong the bells are gonna chime!

-          Happy crafting.
Magpies Miniatures Team.

P.S Slightly off-topic, but very relevant in the news today- have you heard the latest regarding Prince Harry?? What would the Queen say?!!

Website Changes

Website Changes

Posted on 8:02pm Wednesday 22nd Aug 2012
Regular visitors to Magpies Miniatures (and there are a lot of you out there, we thank you sincerely for that!) will realise the website has been undergoing some tweaks and changes. All the content you used to see is still here, so don't worry about not being able to find your favourite items. Rather than going down the left hand side, all our products are now available from the •• SHOP ONLINE •• button on the top menu- this will eventually become a drop-down menu, so you will be able to shop by room from the Homepage, but you can still click it now to access the full categories list.
screencap
A second change is the position of the shopping basket and product search areas- this is to make your browsing of the site easier. They are now located at the top right of your screens, but the Basket is still accessible in the right-hand column for now to ease the change on you all- this will eventually be taken down, so please try to familiarise yourselves with the new layout.
Little changes here and there will be happening in the near future, so please be patient and don't be alarmed- and let us know if something isn't working as it should for you!
We appreciate your feedback as always.
Regards,
Niccy & Mandy- Magpies Miniatures.

Miniature Gypsy Caravan Kits

ETA: Anyone Reading this and interested in the Miniature caravans may be glad to know that they are currently ON OFFER at a reduced price- grab it cheaper while you can!!

-from www.magpies-miniatures.net

I briefly mentioned in my previous Blog post, My 10 Favourite items under £10, that we offer fabulous 12th and 24th scale Gypsy Caravan kits here on Magpies Miniatures, brought to you by McQueenies. Now while they didn't fit in the "under £10" category, I feel like they need a special highlighted mention here in the blog for their incredible detail, astounding beauty, and fantastic quality.

You may, or may not know, that Magpies Miniatures is a family run business in the UK, specifically Cumbria- in the North-West, far far away from the hustle and bustle of busy city life, and within touching distance of the astonishing views that the Lake District have to offer.
cumbria
The Lake District is known worldwide for it's location, beauty, friendly locals, and line of link with famous people, including William Wordsworth, Stan Laurel (Oliver Hardy's comedic companion) and Beatrix Potter. In fact, there's even a Beatrix Potter Museum here! Another of Cumbria's traditions is an annual gathering of around 10,000 Gypsies, travellers and their horses, in a weekend festival known as "Abbleby Horse Fair". Nowadays, many of the travellers turn up with their modern motor-homes and wonderfully beige caravans, but others in keeping with traditions, turn up with their bow-top Gypsy Caravans, much like the style McQueenies recreate in their fabulous products.

Now to take a look the much-loved Gypsy Caravan Kits we stock here at Magpies Miniatures:
12th Scale Gypsy Caravan Kit.
Miniature Gypsy Caravan Kit - 12th Scale Kit
This is the 12th scale kit. Beautiful, isn't it? A fabulous idea if you don't have a lot of space for a full (or another!) dollshouse, or perhaps just fancy the idea of doing something different as a side-line project. The kit would make a wonderful birthday or Christmas present for the collector who seemingly has everything, or maybe you should just treat yourself!
The body of the caravan measures 13½" in length, 7" width, and 10" height (350mm x 180mm x 254mm), and boasts many beautiful features including opening chicken coops, cratch, and two part-door, plus the windows, wheels and everything else you see in the image. Impressed? Let's have a look at the interior:

Unit with Stove
Inside Caravan
Blimey! The inside is as fabulous as the outside! No need to be worried about finding furniture which fits within the walls- McQueenie have that covered. Everything you see here is included in the £195.00 price tag. So you get the kit to make the full outer body as outlined above, plus bed, bench, cooker unit, table, wall unit, and a Phoenix white metal stove.
I bet you can understand why exactly I wanted to highlight these pieces here in the blog- magnificent aren't they?
Remember, these do come as kits, so assembly will be required- but that's half the fun! Of course the other half is the decorating, finishing and admiring- definitely lots of the latter involved.
Click the Main image above, or HERE to view this item on Magpies Miniatures

Perhaps 12th scale isn't right for you. Do your dolls live in a 24th scale? Not to worry, we also have another Gypsy Caravan in 24th scale too...

24th Scale Miniature Gypsy Caravan Kit
Miniature Gypsy Caravan Kit - 24th Scale Kit
Just as stunning as the 12th scale model, the 24th scale caravan offers the same quality finish and attention to detail as it's big sister. Similarly boasting opening chicken coops, cratch and two-part doors, windows, and metal cast wheels, the body of this piece measures 6¾" length, 3½" width, and 5" in height. But is the interior of this as incredible as the other? Brace yourself, we're going in...
1/24 caravan a
1/24 Caravan c
Hurrah! It is! Again, included for £135.00 you receive everything in the image above, and seen here- bed, benches, wall unit, cooker unit, table and a gorgeous black stove.
Again, it is important to realise that these are kits, and you will need a steady hand, lots of patience and good eyesight (or a great pair of spectacles) to accomplish what you want with these pieces.
Also please keep in mind the scale of the caravan you are purchasing- these are of two different scales and sizes, and you don't want to find that the doll you purchase to live within the caravan looks like the BFG in their surroundings.

To make things easier, 12th Scale (1:12) Means 1" of your dollshouse miniature, is equal to 12" in "real life" (where us bigger people live)
So, similarly: 24th Scale (1:24) means 1" of your dollshouse miniature, is equal to 24" in "real life" as we know it!
If you're uncertain which direction you should be going to find accessories for your caravan, please see here:
If you're interested in accessories for the 24th Scale caravan (the caravan on pink-purple background) , please see our specialist 24th scale section by CLICKING HERE
If it's the 12th scale accessories (caravan on green-blue background) you're in need of, then all the other products available in our shop (CLICK HERE) will fit, unless otherwise stated in their descriptions.
Still confused? Don't panic, we're here to help- just CONTACT US with any questions and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

So, now you've got some very important decisions to make- which gypsy caravan will you opt for, what colour are you going to paint it, and how many chickens are you going to have??

I hope you find this information on our Gypsy Caravans insightful and...well, informative! Thank you for reading, and good luck with your projects.
Best wishes,
Niccy (and Mandy) - Magpies Miniatures.
